This month the focus in on leading by example.  I think you can agree that the world needs more true leaders.  People that are worth following not because they have a title but because they set a high standard for others by how they live each day.  Let's look at a word that gets villainized more than it should.  The word is failure.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." - Thomas A. Edison

There are several ways to define failure, two of which are "an omission of occurrence or performance" or "falling short".  The reality is that failure is just part of the process of being alive, nothing we have to be afraid or ashamed of.  Let's face it, if a baby didn't fail multiple times while learning to stand and just gave up then none of us would know how to walk.  You try it, if it works great, if not you try again.  Yet people as a whole make a big deal about failing.  If you stub your toe, you have failed yet no one calls that a failure but if you don't close a sale that suddenly is a failure.

Today's Coaching Challenge

Are there areas in your life where you feel like you are not performing at your best and you're beating yourself up over it?  Think of how much more you could accomplish if you could let it go and try to do better the next time.

Remember when you are leading by example you won't be encouraging others to be better or willing to try new things if you can't accept that failing at something is just part of the process.  There is no way to grow or develop something new and get it right 100% of the time.  So, don't quit or be judgmental of yourself, just find a better way and get started going in a new direction.

Action to take

Make a list of things you considered failures then act like it was really someone else that did it.  What would you say to them, would you be mean or assure them that not always getting it right is just how we grow and learn?
